Mid-table Walsall head up the M6 on a decent run of form having won their last three matches. An impressive away victory at Wycombe in the FA Cup last Saturday – courtesy of goals from Jacob Maddox and Isaac Hutchinson – came off the back of consecutive home wins over Harrogate and Rochdale.

That cup joy got them a second round home game against … oh yeah … us! That’ll be played at the end of this month.

The Saddlers won their first away game of the season, down in Newport, but that is their only success on the road in league action to date this term.

They embarked on a worrying run of 12 games in all competitions without a win not long after that but, with players returning and the squad bolstered, much better results have followed.

The world of football was watching closely and keeping their fingers crossed for good news earlier this season after defender Liam Gordon suffered a foot injury in training, just weeks after joining the club from Bolton.

The Guyana international suffered what manager Michael Flynn described as ‘a bizarre injury’ when he fell over and damaged a muscle in his foot.

“We thought he was going to have to retire, then there was talk of him losing his foot,” Flynn explained. “It’s been a long road back for him and we were all delighted when he made his debut against Cheltenham.”

Forward Danny Johnson has 11 goals from 22 appearances having exploded out of the blocks with six from his first five games this season.

That included a hat-trick in an opening day 4-0 home win over Hartlepool, a fine way to introduce himself following his summer move from Mansfield.

A real handful he’ll need to be marked closely this weekend.

The Good Friday April 2022 away game was a very tight game, and a goal on the strike of half-time from Jack Earing proved to be enough to keep the points in the Midlands.

Watch the highlights from that game here:

United nicked a late goal and all three points thanks to Tristan Abrahams at Brunton Park in November 2021. It could have gone either way, but it was the Blues who crept over the line.

Carlisle rounded off the 2020/21 season with a home game against Walsall and it was a very tight 0-0 draw which brought the curtains down on the campaign.

United were first-footers at the Bescot in January 2021 and they recorded a comfortable away win courtesy of goals from Omari Patrick and Josh Kayode.

Carlisle and Walsall met at the end of January in 2020 and they recorded a second consecutive 2-1 victory with Nick Anderton and Ryan Loft putting the hosts two goals to the good in the first half. Mat Sadler pegged one back, but United held on to claim the points.

United were at the Bescot Stadium for the 2019 festive period – just two days before the turn of the year. Winger Nathan Thomas gave the Blues the lead just after the break, but the home side drew level when Elijah Adebayo netted with 20 minutes left to play. James Clarke was given his marching orders for a tug on Harry McKirdy, and the Cumbrians increased the pressure until they got their match winning strike.

The April 2014 encounter at Brunton Park was a tense affair. It appeared that an early opening goal from Liam Noble was going to do the trick for the Cumbrians but Michael Ngoo struck late to make it a share of the spoils.

We were at the Bescot in December 2013 earlier in that campaign and, having hit the woodwork and missed a penalty, the game was lost courtesy of strikes for the home side from Romaine Sawyers and Milan Lalkovic.

The referee for this game is Mr Ollie Yates. He has been in charge of 16 games so far this season showing 74 yellow cards and one red.

He was at Brunton Park for the 0-0 home draw with Harltepool in January 2022. Jordan Gibson was our only booking on the day.

We saw him at Northampton in October 2021 when a Paul Lewis hat-trick sunk the Blues. It ended 3-0 to the home side, and Jack Armer and Callum Guy went in the book for the Blues.

He was at Brunton Park in March 2021 for our 3-1 home win over Bradford. Rhys Bennett (2) and Ozzy Zanzala scored the goals, and it was a busy day of bookings with Lewis Alessandra, Paul Farman, Jon Mellish and Zanzala all having their names taken.

Mr Yates was also in charge for our November 2020 trip to Hayes & Yeading for our FA Cup first round encounter. Jon Mellish netted twice in the depths of extra time to take it to a penalty shoot-out, with Gav Reilly bagging the decisive spot kick. Dean Furman and Omari Patrick picked up yellow cards.

He was at Brunton Park back in October 2016 for the visit of Crawley. Jabo Ibehre, Jason Kennedy and Luke Joyce scored our goals in a 3-1 victory, and Mark Ellis was the only Carlisle player to be booked on the day.

We then met him at Cambridge in September 2018 when we ran out as 2-1 winners at the Abbey. Richie Bennett and Ash Nadesan netted for us, and Adam Campbell was the solitary booking handed out during the 90 minutes.
