The 56th annual Country Music Association Awards (CMAs) Wednesday night was a visual guide to Western fashion’s past, present and future. While Western style is a mainstream trend this fall, musicians stepped out in traditional country looks embellished for the red carpet as well as sequin-covered gowns, sleek suits and classic bootcut jeans.
Denim was the go-to theme for “Firework” singer Katy Perry who made her CMAs debut for a duet with Thomas Rhett. The pop star walked the red carpet in Marques’Almeida’s off-the-shoulder plunging corset top and wide-leg jeans that flowed into an oversized bow on one side. Crystal-embellished clear shoes and a diamond and pearl choker completed the look.
For her performance, Perry changed into a cowboy hat and strapless denim gown that mimicked the appearance of a skewed jean jacket. Made with Y2K-era yellow–tinted denim, the dress featured a high slit and chunky frayed hem.
Perry teased her appearance on Instagram hours before the ceremony in a post that showed her wearing a denim corset top and wide-leg jeans.
Both looks were reminiscent of Perry’s homage to the iconic denim gown Britney Spears wore to the 2001 American Music Awards alongside a Canadian tuxedo-clad Justin Timberlake. Perry sported a similar dress to 2014 MTV Video Music Awards.
A deconstructed jean jacket was the inspiration behind Kelly Clarkson’s dark denim dress. The “American Idol” alum shared the stage with Kelsea Ballerini, who paired a body-con denim mini dress with floral Balenciaga boots. Denim trimmed Miranda Lambert’s flared trousers. Flat silver studs decorated the bohemian statement piece.
Tried-and-true blue jeans were a staple for men. Cody Johnson’s dark jeans with a center crease was topped off with a giant belt buckle. Alan Jackson paired a leather shacket with tonal music note motifs with a pair of ripped light wash jeans. Jason Nix’s version of a three-piece suit was railroad striped jeans, vest and chore jacket.
Rhett performed in Billy Reid’s $198 made-in-India Tuscumbia shirt made of 100 percent cotton with a custom mosaic jacquard.
Fringe was a necessary accessory on stage. Reba McEntire and Miranda Lambert wore coordinating looks for their performance. The all-black outfits popped with shimmering fringe, hot pink and neon green.
Cole Swindell opted for a more casual vibe with black jeans, a baseball cap and suede jacket with fringe decorating the sleeves, back and pockets.
