Goins, Sammie Jean (Cleveland) – Chattanoogan.com


Sammie Jean Shelton Goins, 79, a resident of Cleveland and born in Decatur, passed away in the early morning of January 1, 2023 in a local hospital, with her daughter by her side. She went into the hospital two weeks before, after having a stroke.

She was a very loving and caring wife, sister, mother, mother-in-law, grandmother and great-grandmother. She was a caregiver to her husband for over six years after an accident, leaving him paralyzed in a wheelchair. She was devoted to caring for him and loved him more than life itself.

She was a Home Interior displayer for years. She helped women decorate their homes and was very good at it. She also worked as a receptionist at Jeffers Tax Service, which the late Wilma Jeffers owned, and was her best friend for many years.

She was the daughter of the late Sam & Katie Shelton. 

She was preceded in death by her by her baby son, Raymond Keith Goins; her son, Richard Goins; her sisters, Evelyn Shelton Mooney and Ann Jo Shelton Pickens; and grandparents, John Joseph, Annie Belle Farris Shelton, Jake and Edna Moore.

Survivors include her husband, Raymond Goins; her daughter and son-in-law, Angie and Robbie DeFriece; her son and daughter-in-law, Mitchell and Ramona Goins; grandchildren, Ashley and Anthony Harris, Chanda and Kendall Herron, Chris and Ashley DeFriece, Chad and Cody Goins and Zack and Stacy Roberts; great-grandchildren, Kain Moffett, Stella Harris, Hailey Harris, Raine Harris, Kayla Herron, Makinley Herron, Tucker Herron, Bentley DeFriece, Madison Goins, Carolina Goins, Gwendolyn Roberts and Easton Roberts; her sister and brothers-in-law, Sue Shelton Higby and Bill and James R. Pickens; several special nieces and nephews; and special friends, Janie Torbett and Mikel Peak.

Her family will receive friends on Thursday, Jan. 5 at Companion Funeral Home from noon-2 p.m., with a Celebration of Life Service to follow at 2 p.m. She will be laid to rest following her service at Lebanon Baptist Church Cemetery.
